The leopard sea cucumber is a soft-bodied sea animal that lives on the seabed. It is found in shallow, warm waters around coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. It matters because it sweeps sand and food through its body and carries small fish and shrimp that live with it.1

It is a detritivore, meaning it feeds on dead material. It moves across the seabed and uses its sticky tentacles to sweep sand grains and detritus into its mouth. It also gets some nourishment from the biofilm that coats the sand grains.1

  • Underside is usually paler, though some are uniformly brown1
  • Roughly cylindrical body, about 36 cm long on average, with a firm, leathery outer skin1
  • Ring of black, paddle-shaped feeding tentacles with white fringes around the mouth1
