The Senegalese cobra is a large, heavy snake that lives in West Africa. It is a venomous cobra, and it is special because scientists once thought it was the same snake as the Egyptian cobra, but it is now recognised as its own species.1

怎麼認出牠

  • Adults are uniformly dark grey-brown on the upper body, with slightly lighter lower flanks.1
  • The throat is dark brown, and the underside is cream with dark grey-brown mottling.1
  • Juveniles are grey with a black head and neck, and often have a light blotch on the back of the hood.1
  • The light blotch usually disappears as the snake grows up, although a few keep it into adulthood.1

常被誤認為： The Egyptian cobra (Naja haje) is often confused with this species. The Senegalese cobra normally has more than 23 dorsal scale rows around the neck, and its head is uniformly dark, with no obvious pattern on the supralabial scales (the scales along the upper lip).1

Its venom is rich in long chain alpha-neurotoxins, which attack the nerves. The Senegalese cobra does not spit venom, so its venom is delivered by a bite.1
