The snouted cobra is a large, highly venomous snake that lives in southern Africa. It is a night hunter that often makes its home in old termite mounds. Because it can deliver a dangerous bite, it is important to know what it looks like and where it lives.1

It lives in dry and moist savanna, especially bushveld and lowveld areas, but not in forests. It often uses an abandoned termite mound as a permanent lair, where it may stay for years if left undisturbed. It also raids poultry runs and can become a nuisance to farmers.1

Adults usually measure 1.2 to 1.8 metres, and can reach 2.5 metres1
Body colour ranges from yellowish to greyish-brown, dark brown or blue-black1
The banded form is blue-black with 7 to 11 yellow to yellow-brown cross bars1
The underside is yellow, mottled with black, with a darker throat band that is more obvious in juveniles1
When disturbed, it raises the front third of its body and spreads a hood while hissing1
