Brazil's lancehead is a venomous pitviper that lives on the ground in the equatorial forests of northern South America. It is a stoutly built snake with a pinkish or reddish-grey body covered in dark blotches. It is uncommon, and it is greatly feared by indigenous people of southeastern Colombia.1

  • Pinkish tan to pinkish or reddish grey body with 9 to 19 dark ash-grey blotches along the back, which may alternate, oppose or merge into bands1
  • Belly usually yellow or pinkish cream, with slightly darker mottling1
  • Tail the same colour as the body, but it may be mostly black1
  • A poorly defined pale brown stripe may run from the eye to the corner of the mouth, bordered below by a dark brown line1

It is an uncommon species. Bites from it have not yet been recorded, but it is greatly feared by indigenous people of southeastern Colombia.1
