The common kingslayer is a tiny Irukandji jellyfish that lives off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is no bigger than a human thumbnail, but it has one of the most potent venoms of any animal. Its sting can cause severe illness, and it has killed at least one person.1

It is found in the waters off Queensland, where people swim and snorkel. Only a very small number are found in late summer and early winter. Its small size makes it hard to see in the water.1

  • The bell is about 31 mm high.1
  • It has light purple warts on its bell, called nematocyst warts.1
  • Some individuals have halo-like rings around their tentacles, but the non-halo form is more common.1

Its venom is one of the most potent in the world. Its sting causes Irukandji syndrome, which brings severe pain, vomiting and a rapid rise in blood pressure. Other stings have caused nausea, intense pain and discomfort.1

Its sting killed American tourist Robert King while he was snorkelling off Port Douglas. Other people have been stung, including a marine stinger adviser who suffered badly blistered hands and skin loss, and a young girl. Because it is so small and hard to see, people can be stung before they notice it.1
