The European garden spider is a large orb-weaver that spins round webs. It is native to Europe and was introduced to North America. Its white markings form a clear cross on its back, which is why it is easy to spot in the right place.1

  • Mottled white markings across the upper abdomen form a cross made of four or more segments.1
  • Body colour ranges from extremely light yellow to very dark grey.1
  • Adult females measure 6.5 to 20 mm in length. Males are smaller, at 5.5 to 13 mm.1
  • Females hang head down in the centre of a round orb web, with one claw hooked to a signal line.1
