The Peruvian coral snake is a small, slender venomous snake that lives in the forests of northwestern South America. It is found in parts of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, often close to rivers. Like other coral snakes, it is marked with bright bands of red, white and black.1

  • Bands of red, white and black rings run around the body.1
  • The black rings are not arranged in groups of three, which separates it from many look-alike snakes.1
  • The black rings are 3 to 4 scales wide, and the red rings are as wide as or wider than the black rings.1
  • The white rings separating the black and red bands are 1 to 1.5 scales wide and have no black tips.1
