Blue ant
The blue ant is a metallic blue-green wasp, not an ant, that lives in south and southeast Australia. Its female is wingless and hunts mole crickets to feed its young. It is a useful pollinator of native Australian flowers.1

The female injects venom through her stinger to paralyse a mole cricket. The paralysed cricket is then left with an egg laid on it, giving the wasp larva a ready supply of food.1

Nsɛm
Despite its name and wingless body, the blue ant is a wasp, not an ant.1
Unlike most thynnid wasps, which attack beetle larvae, the blue ant hunts only mole crickets for its young.1
Adult blue ants pollinate several native Australian flowers while feeding on nectar.1
It is a solitary, parasitic wasp, meaning each female works alone and her larva feeds on another animal.1
