The golden-crowned snake is a small venomous snake that lives only in eastern Australia. It is a forest animal, mostly found in rainforest, and it hunts lizards at night. It is worth knowing because it can be mistaken for other crowned snakes.1

  • The back is grey-brown to dark brown.1
  • The belly is orange to pink, with a line of black spots down the middle.1
  • A pale yellow-brown stripe starts at the snout and sweeps back along both sides of the head, trailing down the neck. This is the 'crown'.1
  • The dorsal scales are in 15 rows at mid-body.1
  • Adults average about 50 cm in total length, including the tail.1

Wɔtaa fa no sɛ: Other crowned snakes, C. krefftii and C. harriettae, have a crown that joins at the back of the head. In the golden-crowned snake the stripe does not join and instead runs down the neck.1
