It was thought to have become extinct at the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, but a population was found in Shark Bay in December 2015.1
It is listed as one of The World's 100 Most Threatened Species.1
Its previously known habitats, the Ashmore and Hibernia Reefs, are about 1,700 km away from Shark Bay.1
Like other sea snakes, it has no gills. It must come up to the surface regularly to breathe air with its lungs.1
