New Caledonian sea krait
The New Caledonian sea krait is a venomous sea snake that lives in the waters around New Caledonia, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It spends time both in the sea and on land near the shore. It is special because it is found almost nowhere else.1

It has been recorded outside its home range only once: a single specimen was found in New Zealand in 1925.1
Its diet is mainly eel-like fishes, and the lipspot moray makes up about half of what it eats.1
Females grow much larger than males. The largest female recorded was 109 cm long, while the largest male was 81.7 cm.1
Its limited range is thought to be because sea kraits of the genus Laticauda spend time on land or in shallow water, which gives them few chances to be carried away by ocean currents.1
