• Its snout has a strongly upturned tip, with a raised, wart-like hump just behind it.1
• The ground colour is light brown to dark brown or pale olive, flecked and mottled with darker tones.1
• It has 17 to 26 brown blotches along its back, which alternate or oppose each other.1
• The top of the head is brown, usually without a pattern, with a black stripe running from behind the eye to the neck.1
• It is relatively small, with adults usually 30 to 35 cm long in total.1

Ina jiiɓindiree e: It is distinguished from Hypnale hypnale by its snout, which has a strongly upturned tip caused by an extended rostral scale. The raised hump behind the snout is covered with 7 to 14 very small scales.1
