The black-faced lancehead is a venomous pit viper, a type of snake that has heat-sensing pits between its eyes and nostrils. It lives in parts of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, mostly in the Cerrado, a large region of grassland and savanna. Its venom is also being studied for possible medical uses.1

1

Its venom has been researched for the possible therapeutic effects of its toxins, meaning they might one day be used in medicine.1

2

It is at home in cool, humid places, rather than the hot, dry conditions many people expect from snakes in South America.1

3

Its colours and markings can be very different from one snake to another, which makes it hard to pin down by looks alone.1
