  • Its body has 21 to 25 rows of scales at the middle of the body, usually 23.1
  • Most of its body scales have a ridge down the middle (keeled). The scales near the back of the body have small bumps on the ridge, even in small snakes.1
  • In large adults, the ridges on the back scales are highly raised.1
  • Adults are large. The specimens measured range from about 87 cm to about 123 cm long, including the tail.1

Ina heewi waylondireede e: It was once grouped with Bothrops pulcher, a related pitviper, and was long treated as part of that species. Scientists later found it to be a separate species.1

It is viviparous, meaning the female gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs.1

2

Its genus, Bothrocophias, was created in 2001 and is known as the toadheaded pitvipers.1

Feññinoowo fenaande

Fenaande: It is just a form of Bothrops pulcher.

Goonga: For many years it was grouped with Bothrops pulcher. Its own scientific name is valid, and it is recognised as a separate species.1
