The king baboon spider is a large tarantula from east Africa. It lives in shrublands and grasslands in Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe, and it is one of the few tarantulas that makes a hissing sound to warn off threats.1

Humpito
It is one of the few tarantulas that uses stridulation, a hissing sound made by rubbing body parts together, as a main defence.1
Its silk near the burrow works as an early warning system, alerting it to prey walking nearby.1
It does not have urticating hairs, the irritating hairs that many tarantulas flick at attackers.1
It is a slow-growing species.1
