The Sunda slow loris is a small, slow-moving primate with large eyes and a wet nose. It lives in the forests and rainforests of Indonesia, West Malaysia, southern Thailand and Singapore. It is special because it produces a toxin in glands inside its elbows, which it spreads over its fur while grooming.1

Hello arano
It lives in evergreen forests and prefers rainforests with continuous dense canopies. It spends most of its life in trees, sleeping in a ball in branches or foliage above the ground.1

It eats phloem sap, floral nectar, fruit, gum and arthropods such as spiders and insects. It licks wounds on trees to feed on gum and also eats molluscs, including the giant land snail, and birds' eggs.1

  • Dark rings around its large eyes and a white nose with a whitish strip that runs up to the forehead1
  • A dark stripe that runs from the back of the head along the spine1
  • Soft, thick, woolly fur that ranges from light brown to deep reddish brown, with a lighter underside1
  • Measures 27 to 38 cm from head to tail, and weighs 599 to 685 g1
  • Moves slowly through trees on all four limbs, usually with three limbs attached to a support at a time1

Ina heewi waylondireede e: The Bengal slow loris is often confused with it. The Sunda slow loris has dark inverse teardrop markings around the eyes that meet the dark stripe on the back of the head, a more distinct white stripe between the eyes, and a browner coat. The Bengal slow loris is larger, greyer and shows less contrast.1

All slow loris species produce a toxin in glands on the insides of their elbows. The animal spreads this toxin over its body and onto its young using its toothcomb while grooming. The toxin is in its saliva-covered fur, and it can bite when threatened.1

When threatened, it can bite, roll into a ball to expose its toxic saliva-covered fur, or roll up and drop from the trees. Its main method of avoiding predators is hiding.1

1

Its teeth are often pulled out before it is sold as a pet, which can cause infection or death. Without its teeth it cannot be released back into the wild.1

2

It has an extremely low metabolic rate compared with other mammals of its size.1

3

It mostly lives alone, with one study showing it spent only 8% of its active time near other individuals.1

4

It is one of the most abundant primate species on sale at Indonesian pet markets.1

Feññinoowo fenaande

Fenaande: It is a sloth.

Goonga: In 1770 a Dutch naturalist described a specimen as a type of sloth, but it is a primate, a strepsirrhine.1
