The black button spider is a venomous spider found in much of Africa, as well as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iraq and Saint Helena. It is one of six Latrodectus species found in southern Africa, and its bite can cause very unpleasant symptoms.1

It builds its web close to the ground, seldom higher than half a metre. It rests in a tuft of grass, a low shrub, an empty burrow or under a loose stone. It is sometimes found in houses in Gauteng and the Free State, and it is often found in crops such as cotton, maize, strawberries, sugarcane and vineyards. It lives at altitudes from 47 to 2020 metres above sea level.1
