The dog-toothed cat snake is a large, nocturnal snake that is active at night. It lives across Southeast Asia, from southern Thailand to the Philippines and Indonesia, and it is often found in gardens, plantations and towns as well as forests. It is a rear-fanged snake, so its venom is delivered through teeth at the back of its mouth.1

It lives in a wide range of places, from primary and secondary forest to cultivated land, rural gardens and urban areas. It is often found in coconut plantations. In forests it lives in the canopy, high in the trees. On Bali it is relatively common in secondary forests and gardens, especially where trees and bushes grow over rivers and streams.1

It feeds mainly on small vertebrates such as birds and bird eggs, and may also take lizards and small bats. It hunts by pursuing and overpowering its prey, using both its jaws and its tail to immobilise it.1

It may have a potent neurotoxic venom, which attacks the nerves. Its effects have been shown to be reversible with neostigmine, a drug that affects nerve signalling, so envenoming from this species can be treated with anticholinesterase therapy.1
