The small-scaled burrowing asp is a black snake that lives underground in parts of West Africa. It is a venomous snake with long, hollow fangs, and scientists have studied it only a few times in the wild. It is interesting because it uses its fangs in an unusual way.1

Its venom is thick and slightly milky in appearance. It appears to be related to elapid venom rather than viper venom. In humans, the bite may first cause pain near the bite, followed by numbness and swelling in the same area.1

Eziokwu

1

It has long, hollow fangs, but usually uses only one of them to stab its prey.1

2

When given several mice, it envenomated all of them before going back to eat them.1

3

Most of its prey burrows, so many of its strikes happen underground, where there is little room to move.1

Onye na-ekpughe akụkọ ụgha

Akụkọ ụgha: It is a viper, because it has long hollow fangs like vipers.

Eziokwu: It is not closely related to vipers. Its fangs are similar, but it is more closely related to the families Colubridae and Elapidae, and its venom is unlike viper venom.1
