Its venom is the most potent of all black snakes in the genus Pseudechis. Unlike other black snakes, it is mainly neurotoxic, meaning it attacks the nerves. Muscle weakness and paralysis can develop within 2 to 21 hours of a bite, and this can be life-threatening.1

The Mekeo people call it auguma, meaning "to bite again", because it often bites repeatedly.1
The Kiwai people believe it is sent by a magic-man to kill enemies, and bitten people sometimes seek a magic-man instead of going to hospital.1
Some local people in New Guinea believe it and the taipan are opposite sexes of the same species.1
The first documented survivor of a bite was a young man treated in New Guinea in 1959, using antivenom made from its venom.1
Its venom was first extracted for science by Australian herpetologist Ken Slater in the mid-1950s, and sent to Melbourne for antivenom research.1
Its range has shrunk because of habitat destruction, killing by locals and poisoning by the introduced cane toad.1
