Peringuey's adder is a small viper that lives in the Namib desert of Namibia and southern Angola. It hides under the sand, with only its eyes and the tip of its tail showing, and waits for lizards to pass by. It is a venomous snake that uses its venom to catch its prey.1

It eats lizards, including Meroles lizards and the barking gecko Ptenopus. It ambushes prey by lying buried in the sand, then seizes and envenomates it when the prey comes close. Aporosaura lizards, which have high water content, are an important source of water for this snake.1
