The spotted scorpionfish is a venomous fish that lives in the Atlantic Ocean. It hides on shallow coral reefs and rocky seabeds, where it waits, almost still, for small fish and crustaceans to come close. Its back spines carry venom, so it is one to keep well away from.1

The spines on the back inject venom that contains cardiotoxins, which cause a drop in blood pressure and in heart and breathing rates. Symptoms include excruciating pain at the site, followed by swelling, redness and occasionally skin death. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, agitation, sweating, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing and severe low blood pressure.1
