Milos viper
The Milos viper is a venomous snake found only on a few small islands in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea off Greece. It is a rare animal, and it is special because it has adapted to eating birds and lizards rather than the rodents found elsewhere.1

Xibaar
The western Cyclades have no native rodents, so this viper has adapted to hunting birds and lizards.1
Although it is mainly on the ground, it climbs trees to hunt birds and other prey on autumn nights.1
In 1998, an estimated 500–600 adults were being removed from the wild or killed each year through illegal collection, road deaths and persecution.1
Fewer than 4,000 adults were thought to survive in the wild as of 2022.1
