Xibaar
In 2009, a fishing trawler capsized off Chiba while its three crew were hauling in a net full of these jellyfish. Another trawler rescued all three.1
It can grow from the size of a grain of rice to more than 1.8 m wide in about six months.1
Its venom is being studied for possible medical uses. In cancer research, the venom has been shown to slow a process that helps cancer cells spread.1
It is one of the largest jellyfish ever recorded, in the same size class as the lion's mane jellyfish.1
Blooms have grown more frequent since the 20th century, with the largest recorded between 2002 and 2003.1
