Purple-striped jelly
The purple-striped jelly is a jellyfish with a bell marked by purple stripes. It lives off the coast of California, and scientists study it closely because so little is known about how it feeds. Its sting is extremely painful to people, though stings are rare.1

Ni ngay ko xàmmee
- The bell can be up to 70 cm across and usually has a radial pattern of purple stripes.1
- Juveniles are pinkish, with long, dark maroon tentacles.1
- Adults have eight long, dark marginal arms and four frilly oral arms.1
- As it ages, the tentacles thicken and look pale, and the oral arms become harder to see.1

Xibaar
Young Cancer crabs make their home in the jellyfish and eat the parasitic amphipods that feed on it and damage it.1
Leatherback turtles are the main predator of this jellyfish, which they favour because its four oral arms are rich in carbon and nitrogen.1
A specimen about 15 feet (4.5 m) long has been reported.1
It is more active in lively currents, which helps it move and catch prey.1
