The Chaco golden knee is a large tarantula that lives in the grasslands of Argentina and Paraguay. It is known for being calm and docile, which is one reason it is kept as a pet. It is one of the larger tarantula species.1

It has only rudimentary eyesight. Instead, it senses its surroundings through hairs (setae) across its body, feeling vibrations in the ground and air and picking up chemical signals, a bit like a sense of smell.1

Females can live for well over twenty years, while males live for only about five or six years.1
