Dwyer's snake is a small, shy, venomous snake that lives only in Australia. It hunts small lizards at night and hides under rocks and leaf litter during the day. Its bite is considered weakly venomous, but it still deserves respect.1

It is a secretive snake that shelters under rocks, debris and ground litter, and sometimes in burrows made and abandoned by other animals. It prefers open woodland, grassland and rocky areas.1

Dwyer's snake has hollow fangs at the front of the upper jaw. These fangs connect through ducts to venom glands near the eyes. Herpetologists at the Queensland Museum describe its venom as weakly venomous.1

The Queensland Museum does not list Dwyer's snake among the eight snake species in the Brisbane area considered capable of inflicting potentially fatal bites. One man in Western Sydney reported that a bite did not hurt at all, and only a small infection developed a couple of days later.1

When threatened, it prefers to coil into a tight ball, which protects its head and other vulnerable parts of its body from larger predators.1
