The Papuan black snake is a large, highly venomous snake that lives in southern New Guinea and nearby islands. It is mostly black with blue-grey underparts. Its venom attacks the nerves, so a bite needs urgent medical care.1

Its venom is the most potent of all black snakes in the genus Pseudechis. Unlike other black snakes, it is mainly neurotoxic, meaning it attacks the nerves. Muscle weakness and paralysis can develop within 2 to 21 hours of a bite, and this can be life-threatening.1

It is widely feared in Papua New Guinea's Central Province, but it causes only a small minority of snakebites there. The more dangerous taipan causes far more.1

如果牠咬人

  • Get to a hospital quickly, because delaying treatment can be dangerous. The venom can be treated with CSL black snake antivenom, and intubation (a breathing tube) may be needed if breathing is affected.1
  • 加壓固定法：用彈性繃帶緊緊包住咬傷處，再往上包住整條手臂或腿，用夾板固定，並讓傷者完全不動，直到救援抵達。
  • 不要清洗咬傷處：醫院可以檢驗留在皮膚上的毒液，選出正確的抗毒血清。

注意安全
