The Southern Sydney funnel-web spider is a glossy black spider that lives in forests on the far southern coast of New South Wales and in eastern Victoria, Australia. It is a close relative of the Sydney funnel-web, but it mostly lives in remote areas, away from people. Its work helped lead to a funnel-web spider antivenom.1

  • Normally has a glossy black back and black chelicerae (fangs)1
  • Has a deep-brown or plum-coloured underbelly1
  • An adult grows to about 5 cm in length1
  • A report in 2015 described an unusual individual with a blood-red belly and chelicerae1

Its close relative, the Sydney funnel-web, is found in urban areas. The Southern Sydney funnel-web mostly lives in remote forest areas, which helps tell them apart by where they are found.1

It poses little danger to the public because it commonly lives in remote areas, away from people.1
