The spiny-tailed monitor is a lizard from northern and western Australia. It lives among dry, rocky hills and is known for its round tail covered in spiny scales. It is a small monitor, and it hides in rock cracks and burrows during the day.1

This lizard is found in arid rocky ranges and outcrops. It shelters under rock slabs, between boulders, in rock crevices and in burrows, and only rarely in spinifex.1

Upper side is a rich, dark brown with bright yellowish to cream spots, which often enclose a few dark scales1
Tail is round in section and has very spiny scales1
Tail is about 1.3 to 2.3 times as long as the head and body combined1
Pale longitudinal stripes run along the neck1
Has 70 to 115 scales around the middle of the body1

常被誤認為： It is similar to V. baritji and V. primordius. The spiny-tailed monitor can be told apart by the pale stripes on its neck, which those two species do not have.1
