The Komodo dragon is a very large lizard, and it is the biggest lizard alive today. It lives on a few small islands in Eastern Indonesia, where it hunts deer and pigs and sits at the top of its food chain. Adults occasionally attack people, so it is a dangerous animal to keep your distance from.1

It prefers hot, dry places, such as dry open grassland, savanna and low-lying tropical forest. It digs burrows up to 3 m wide for shelter and sleeps in them at night. Young Komodo dragons live in trees to stay away from adults.1

Komodo dragons hunt and ambush their prey. Young ones eat small animals such as insects and birds, while adults mainly eat Javan rusa deer and feral pigs. They also eat a lot of carrion, which is dead animals they find.1
