The touch-me-not sponge is a large sea sponge that grows on the seabed. It lives in shallow waters of the Western Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and the Bahamas. It is worth knowing about because touching it can irritate the skin.1

It is a filter feeder. It draws water in through small pores, and cells lining its inner chambers move the water along and trap tiny food particles, mostly bacteria-sized.1

Often grows as rounded lobes, each with a cup-shaped dip on top1
Outer surface is smooth but not shiny1
Inside of the cup-shaped openings is rougher than the outside1
Soft, fragile and crumbly, and can grow to about 30 cm wide and tall, sometimes 1 metre wide1

Tiny parasitic worms often live inside it. There may be tens of thousands in one sponge, and they can make up five percent of its weight.1

Small gobies, a type of fish, live inside its openings and feed largely on those worms.1

It has been seen to 'smoke', releasing large numbers of sperm from its openings.1

It can grow up to 1 metre wide, although about 30 cm is more common.1

Its shape changes from place to place. In the Bahamas it grows as rounded lobes, while elsewhere it can form flat crusts, concentric mounds or vase-shaped structures.1
