The Roatán coral snake is a small venomous snake with bold red, black and narrow bands of colour. It lives only on Roatán, an island off the coast of Honduras. It is critically endangered, which means it is at very high risk of disappearing in the wild.1

  • Bicoloured, with alternating wide and narrow black rings separated by red rings.1
  • Each wide black ring is 3 scales wide. Each narrow black ring is 1 or 2 scales wide.1
  • Adults are usually 45–60 cm (18–24 in) long, including the tail.1
  • Males have 33–39 black rings on the body, and females have 41–45.1
