Hong Kong warty newt
The Hong Kong warty newt is a salamander with brown skin and orange spots on its belly. It lives in Hong Kong and in the coastal parts of Guangdong Province. It is the only newt living in Hong Kong, which makes it special there.1

- Light to dark brown body with orange patches on the underside1
- The patches have a unique pattern on each individual, like a human fingerprint1
- Small granules across the skin, and a skin ridge running along the back from the neck through the front third of the tail1

- In the breeding season, the male's tail develops a white or bluish stripe that shows in dim light1
Wɔtaa fa no sɛ: Some naturalists consider it a subspecies of Paramesotriton chinensis. Others disagree, because the two have separate ranges and differ in appearance and habitat preference.1

When threatened, it may roll onto its back and show its bright belly, pretending to be dead.1
Each newt's orange belly pattern is unique, a bit like a human fingerprint.1
The male's tail stripe glows white or bluish in dim light during the breeding season.1
Like other newts, its tadpoles have finger-like gills around the neck, which disappear completely after metamorphosis.1
