The spot-fin porcupinefish is a spiny fish that lives in warm seas around the world. It is poisonous to eat, because it stores a strong poison called tetrodotoxin in parts of its body. It lives mostly on coral and rocky reefs.1

Nsɛm

1

It can inflate itself by swallowing water, making its body much larger to scare off predators.1

2

It stores tetrodotoxin in its liver, skin, gonads and other organs, so it is harmful to eat.1

3

Juveniles live in open water, floating in the sea until they reach about 20 cm long.1

4

Adults are solitary, except during the mating season, and are most active at sunset and sunrise.1

5

Its liver often holds cysts from a parasite, but these pose no danger to humans.1
