The giant Amazonian ant is one of the largest ant species in the world. It lives underground in the lowland rainforests of South America, where its nests can have several entrances. Its size makes it easy to spot among other ants.1

It eats both plant and animal food. Foragers bring back fruits of vismia plants, inga seeds, and small animals such as spiders, crickets and snails. About 10% of foraging trips succeed, and successful trips usually last 30 to 60 minutes.1

Neighbouring colonies have separate foraging areas. When ants from different colonies meet at the border, they face off, lock their jaws and push and kick each other.1

Border fights can last up to half an hour, and both ants are usually left uninjured.1

It is one of the largest ant species in the world.1

One colony can use more than one nest at a time. Some nest entrances were found 40 to 250 cm apart.1

Its nests are about 40 cm deep, with chambers roughly 3 cm high and 20 cm wide.1
