The horned adder is a small, stout viper that lives in the dry deserts and scrublands of southwest Africa. It is easy to tell apart because of a single large, horn-like scale above each eye. Like all vipers, it is venomous.1

The venom contains a neurotoxic phospholipase A2, a protein that attacks the nerves. It acts as a presynaptic toxin, meaning it interferes with nerve signals at the junction between nerve and muscle. Bite symptoms in people include swelling, severe pain, nausea, vomiting and shock. Blisters and necrotic ulcers (areas of dead tissue) may form around the bite.1

Bites are thought to be rare, and no epidemiological data (records of bites and outcomes over time) is available. Tests on mice suggest the venom is one of the weakest in its genus, but an older report states it is highly toxic and that a number of deaths have occurred.1
