The dancing white lady spider is a huntsman spider that lives in the sand dunes of the Namib Desert in Namibia. It hides in burrows during the hot day and comes out at night, when it can tap on the sand to send messages to other spiders.1

Hello arano
Bare sand dunes in the Namib Desert. Each spider lives in a silk-lined burrow dug into the sand, with a territory of about a 3 metre radius around it. It stays in the burrow by day to avoid the heat of the sun.1

It eats a wide range of insects, arachnids and reptiles, mostly nocturnal prey such as beetles, moths and weevils. It uses a sit-and-wait strategy, staying in its territory until prey arrives. Larger males sometimes eat other spiders.1

1

The spiders communicate by tapping their front legs on the sand. This seismic signalling is called drumming.1

2

Males may be attacked and killed by females if their drumming signal is too much like that of prey.1

3

Males can travel more than 50 metres in one night while searching for a mate.1

4

Each spider has eight eyes arranged to give a full panoramic view of its surroundings, which is unusual for spiders at night.1

5

Burrows can be up to 40 cm long and 25 cm deep, and their shape keeps them cooler than the surface.1

6

Females live about 6 months, while males live only 1 to 2 months.1

Feññinoowo fenaande

Fenaande: It is the same spider as the wheel spider

Goonga: It is often confused with the wheel spider, but they are different species, even though they live in the same place.1
