Long-spined sea urchin
The long-spined sea urchin is a spiny, black sea creature that lives on coral reefs. It is one of the most important grazers on Caribbean and western Atlantic reefs, because it eats the algae that could otherwise smother the coral.1

Eziokwu
Some individuals have spines up to 30 cm long, while most sea urchins have spines of only 1 to 3 cm.1
In 1983, more than 97% of this sea urchin died across the Caribbean in a mass die-off, and the reefs became overgrown with algae.1
When males and females are ready to spawn, they release a fluid that alerts other urchins to release their eggs and sperm too.1
It is the most abundant and important herbivore on the coral reefs of the western Atlantic and Caribbean.1
Dedicated nurseries that grow these urchins to help restore reefs exist in Jamaica and Puerto Rico.1
