Stejneger's pit viper is a venomous snake found across much of Asia, from India and Nepal to southern China and Taiwan. It lives mainly in forests, where its bright green colour helps it blend in with the leaves. Its bite is very painful and destroys the flesh around the wound, so it is one to know about.1

It has a potent hemotoxin, a venom that damages blood and body tissue. The bite usually feels extremely painful, like being branded with a hot iron, and the pain can last about 24 hours. Within a few minutes the flesh around the bite dies and turns black, and the wound swells quickly.1

The bite causes severe pain and tissue death around the wound. The amount of tissue damaged depends on how much venom is injected and how deep the bite is.1
