Tityus discrepans is a scorpion from northern and north-eastern South America. It is known as a serious public health problem in Venezuela, where its sting can be dangerous, especially for children and older people.1

It feeds on spiders, insects such as cockroaches and butterflies, and has been noted to prey on other scorpions. It is nocturnal and hunts at night.1

Juveniles can be light yellow-brown, with black areas on the rest of the body1

The venom contains about 80 types of toxins. Six are Bactridines, which block sodium channels in the nervous system. Ten are considered dangerous to humans, because their low molecular weight lets them travel quickly through the bloodstream to the heart, lungs and pancreas. The sting can cause sweating, breathlessness, excessive salivation, cramps, fever and vomiting.1

It is considered a serious public health problem in Venezuela and is dangerous for all ages, especially children and the elderly. In severe cases the sting can cause heart failure, pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas).1
