名字的由來： The species name aphanes means "that which is unseen or inconspicuous", a reference to its camouflage from its colour and skin flaps.1

The lacy scorpionfish is a small, strange-looking reef fish that lies still on the seabed and looks like weed or sponge. It lives in the western Pacific, and it is rare. Its camouflage makes it hard to spot, even for divers.1

It lives on coral slopes and soft seabed, at depths between 5 and 30 metres. It is a benthic fish, which means it rests on the bottom rather than swimming in open water.1

Its most typical prey is smaller fish. It ambushes them from the seabed, using camouflage and the quivering tentacles on its dorsal fin to lure them in.1

  • Two black spots sit in the membrane between the sixth and eighth rays of the dorsal fin.1
  • The dorsal fin spines are rigid, with strongly pointed tips.1
  • It has 12 to 18 tentacles under the lower jaw, 2 to 4 below the eyes, and many on the flanks above the lateral line.1
  • Long, branched tentacles grow on the supraocular and rear lacrimal spines.1
  • Adults have 16 or 17 pectoral-fin rays.1

常被誤認為： Three related species, R. argoliba, R. cea and R. xenops, lack the two black spots on the dorsal fin. R. eschmeyeri and R. frondosa have soft, fleshy fin membranes, while this species does not.1
