Russell's lionfish

Pterois russelii
名字的由來： The species name honours Patrick Russell, a Scottish surgeon and herpetologist who illustrated and described this fish in 1803 without naming it.1

Russell's lionfish is a striped reef and seabed fish with venomous spines along its fins. It lives in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, from eastern Africa to Japan and Australia. Its spines carry venom, so it is one to admire from a distance.1

  • Whitish body with vertical stripes of reddish brown1
  • 13 spines and 10 to 12 soft rays in the dorsal fin1
  • 3 spines and 7 or 8 soft rays in the anal fin1
  • No rows of small dark spots on the dorsal, anal and tail fins1
  • Comparatively short dorsal-fin spines1

常被誤認為： Related lionfishes and scorpionfishes often have rows of small dark spots on their soft fins. Russell's lionfish does not have these spots, and its dorsal-fin spines are comparatively short.1
