The clearfin lionfish is a carnivorous, ray-finned fish with venomous spines. It lives on rocky reefs in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It hides in crevices by day and feeds at night.1

  • Large pectoral fins that flare out to the side. They are clear and unbanded.1
  • Two white horizontal lines on the caudal peduncle, the narrow base of the tail.1
  • A dorsal fin with 12 or 13 long, venomous spines.1
  • Usually about 20 cm (8 in) long, and can grow to about 24 cm (9 in).1
