The grey stingfish is a small sea fish with venomous spines. It lives in warm, shallow coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and it is a relative of the scorpionfishes. Its spines can inject venom into people, so it is worth knowing what it looks like.1

It lives in nearshore waters on the continental shelf, at depths of 10 to 55 m (33 to 180 ft). It prefers sheltered places such as bays and lagoons, and soft seabed.1

  • The upper body has pale bars and stripes, and the lower body is pale.1
  • The margin of the dorsal fin is dark, with a black spot on the front part of the soft-rayed section.1
  • The caudal (tail) fin is crossed by two wide, vertical bars.1
  • The lowest pectoral fin ray is clearly detached from the rest, and has a fleshy cap.1
  • There are no scales on the head and body, apart from those along the lateral line. Colour is variable.1

It has a venom gland at the base of its fin spines. A groove in each spine carries the venom to the tip, so the venom is delivered through the spine.1
