The striped eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus, is a fish that lives mainly on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. It is now also found in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It has venomous spines on its fins that it uses to sting when threatened.1

It is found mainly in coral reefs, and also in estuaries, tide pools and open coasts. Juveniles form dense, ball-shaped schools, while adults hide under ledges during the day.1

The venom is made of crinotoxins and plototoxins. It mainly destroys red blood cells, and also causes swelling, pain and muscle spasms. Symptoms range from mild to severe and include extreme pain, dizziness, redness, swelling, tissue death, numbness, vomiting, breathing difficulty, shock and sepsis.1

Its skin also has cells that release venom, not just its spines.1

In laboratory tests, its sting was lethal to fish, crabs and rodents.1

Juveniles gather in ball-shaped schools of about 100 fish.1

It reached the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, and has been recorded there since 2002.1

Since 2019 it has been on the European Union's list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern. This means it cannot be imported, bred, transported, sold or released into the environment in the EU.1
