Asian honey bee
The Asian honey bee is a honey-making bee that lives across South, Southeast and East Asia. Its colonies build nests with several combs inside cavities, and it is one of the bees people in the region meet most often. It is now also found in parts of Australia and the Pacific.1

Sɛdeɛ wobɛhunu no
- Adults are black with four yellow stripes across the abdomen.1
- Workers have a pollen press on the hind leg and a stinger.1
- Queens are larger than workers.1
- Drones have larger eyes, no stinger and a blunter abdomen.1
- Medium-sized, about 10 to 11 mm long.1
Wɔtaa fa no sɛ: It is very similar to the western honey bee, Apis mellifera, in size, shape and behaviour, and both build multi-comb nests in cavities. The two are separate species: their colonies differ in size, with Asian honey bee colonies holding about 6,000 to 7,000 workers compared with up to 50,000 or more for the western honey bee, and the two species do not produce offspring when they mate.1

Its nests have a small entrance that helps guard against invasion by other nests. When a Japanese giant hornet invades, about 500 Japanese honey bees surround it and vibrate their flight muscles until it is heated to death.1

Japanese honey bees can heat an attacking giant hornet to 47 °C, which is hot enough to kill it, while keeping the temperature below their own lethal limit of 48 to 50 °C.1
Its nest temperature stays at about 33 to 35.5 °C, even when the outside air ranges from 12 to 36 °C.1
It stores about a third of its nectar in concentrated form to get through harsh winters.1
Its colonies usually hold 6,000 to 7,000 workers, far fewer than the western honey bee.1
Atosɛm sɛefoɔ
Atosɛm: The Asian and western honey bees are simply two races of the same species.
Nokorɛ: They are two distinct species. Their colonies differ in size and they do not produce offspring when they mate.1
