Stephens' banded snake is a tree-dwelling snake that lives only on the east coast of Australia. It is highly venomous, and its venom affects the blood, so it is one of the snakes that people should give plenty of space. It spends most of its life high in the trees of forests.1

Sitya ntoni?
It is a nocturnal predator that hunts both by actively searching and by ambush. It often coils among rodent nests in tree hollows and waits for prey to return. It mainly eats frogs, small lizards, bush rats, mice and pygmy possums, and it hunts juveniles because its mouth is too small for adult prey.1

Sidla ngokubhidaniswa no: Its closest relatives are the broad-headed snake, which shares its coastal range, and the pale-headed snake, which lives further inland. All three are tree-dwelling snakes in the same genus.1

Amandla etyhefu yokuluma nokuhlaba

Ukuluma

Ityhefu iphuma ngamazinyo aso etyhefu okanye ngamazinyo aso xa siluma.

Ityhefu yaso yokuluma okanye yokuhlaba yenza ntoni?

Its venom is procoagulant, meaning it makes blood clot. It contains prothrombinase, which triggers the production of thrombin in the blood, causing tiny clots throughout the body. Symptoms include nausea, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and sweating. If left untreated, the clotting leads to excessive bleeding as blood vessels rupture.1

Siyingozi kangakanani ebantwini?

Ingozi ebantwini: Kubi kakhuluUkulunywa kufuna ugqirha. Ukufa kunqabe kakhulu.

It is described as a ready biter, and its envenoming is potentially fatal. Only one death has been recorded: an elderly man in his 60s in Kalang, New South Wales, whose rescue was delayed by torrential rain and floods.1

Iindaba ezimnandi: oogqirha banamayeza (i-antivenom) okanye unyango lwale nto.1

Senza ntoni xa soyika?

It is described as nervous and defensive towards other animals, and it is a ready biter when threatened.1

Ukuba siyaluma

  • Victims have been successfully treated with up to four doses of 3,000 unit tiger snake antivenom. The wounded person must be transported to hospital for medical treatment.1
  • Ukubopha ngoxinzelelo nokunqanda ukushukuma (pressure immobilisation): songa ibhandeji eqinileyo enwebekayo phezu kwendawo elunyiweyo uze unyuke ngelungu lonke, uliqinise ngesiplinti, kwaye ugcine umntu engashukumi kwaphela de kufike uncedo.
  • Musa ukuhlamba indawo elunyiweyo: izibhedlele zinokuvavanya ityhefu eseleyo esikhumbeni ukuze zikhethe i-antivenom echanekileyo.

Soloko utsalela inombolo kaxakeka kuqala (112, 000, 911). Esi sisikhokelo soncedo lokuqala ngokubanzi, asilocebiso lwezonyango. Iziseko zoncedo lokuqala

  • Ungaze uchukumise, ubambe okanye uqhule isilwanyana sasendle, nokuba sincinci, kwaye nokuba sibonakala silele okanye sifile.
  • Sinike indawo. Ukuba udibana naso, hlala uzolile, buyela umva kancinci kwaye usiyeke sihambe ngendlela yaso.
  • Ukuba siyakuluma: hlala uzolile, musa ukushukuma, tsalela inombolo kaxakeka (112, 000, 911) okanye uye esibhedlele ngokukhawuleza. Khumbula ukuba sasikhangeleka njani, ifoto iyanceda.
