The caatinga coral snake is a venomous snake that lives in eastern Brazil, south of the Amazon. It is large for its group, the coral snakes, and its bright red, black and white rings are its best clue. It is often mistaken for a more widespread coral snake.1

It hunts a wide range of long, cold-blooded animals. These include caecilians (limbless amphibians), amphisbaenids (worm lizards) and other snakes, including its own species.1

  • Red, black and white (or yellow) rings, like most coral snakes.1
  • Black rings come in groups of three, called triads, with two white rings between them.1
  • The white rings are about as wide as the black rings.1
  • The red rings sit between the triads. They are narrower than the triads but wider than a single black or white ring.1
  • Adults usually measure 70 to 85 cm (2.3 to 2.8 ft) including the tail.1

常被誤認為： It is often confused with Micrurus lemniscatus, a widespread coral snake with a similar colour pattern. The caatinga coral snake is large for its genus, and its ring pattern is the key feature to check.1
