The Philippine hornet is a species of hornet found only in the Philippines. It is known for its potent venom, which is the most toxic of any wasp species tested. Its sting can cause severe symptoms, so it is important to know it when you see one.1

分布在
Endemic to the Philippines. Main subspecies on Luzon, others in the Visayas (including Leyte and Samar) and on Negros.1

  • Its nests hang from trees and bushes.1
  • Early in construction, its nest is round (spherical).1
  • As the nest grows, it becomes longer and hangs vertically.1

The venom is the most toxic of any wasp species tested, measured by its effect on mice. Its LD50 (the dose that kills half of the mice tested) is 1.6 mg/kg, which is lower than the 4.0 mg/kg of the Asian giant hornet, so it is more toxic per unit of weight. Severe envenomation can cause pain at the sting site, convulsions (fits), cyanosis (bluish skin from low oxygen) and hematuria (blood in the urine).1

Its venom is highly potent, but the Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia) is responsible for many more human deaths. This is because the Asian giant hornet injects a much larger volume of venom per sting.1
